Another empty cereal box later, the dinosaur came to life with a moving jaw and scary sharp teeth. Next he asked me for a Tyrannosaurus Rex. A trip to the hardware store for a can of white spray paint and my son played with that thing for years. Within an hour or so I had transformed that cereal box into a darn good replica of the Millennium Falcon. I ran to get scissors and tape and began cutting the box and taping, never cutting a piece off, just cutting, folding and taping origami style. I had just finished a box of Rice Krispies and was staring at the empty carton when I literally saw a fully formed Millennium Falcon staring back at me. Necessity being the mother of invention, I figured out an inexpensive yet elegant solution. Daniel wanted a model replica of the Millennium Falcon. However, the question I found myself asking was, did I choose a field in which I could truly excel? My 2 year-old son answered this question indirectly during my fellowship year. Whether I am correcting a birth defect, repairing an acquired deformity, or enhancing appearance, looking good and feeling good about oneself is inexorably linked in the human psyche. It was an opportunity that I enthusiastically pursued, for I knew that I wanted my professional life to be dedicated to helping others look and feel their best. I consider myself extremely fortunate for having selected a medical specialty that values artistry and through years of disciplined study and practice, has enabled me to hone my artistic vision and showcase my abilities.įollowing 6 years of general surgical and head & neck surgical training, I chose to pursue a fellowship in facial plastic surgery. However, during the selection process for residency, academic excellence is valued highly while artistic talent is almost never assessed formally.
